Chan Buddhism, known as Zen in Japan, is a Chinese school of Mahayana Buddhism that emphasizes direct experience over theoretical knowledge. Rooted in meditation and the principle of no-mind (無心, wúxīn), Chan teaches that enlightenment arises through mindful awareness and insight into one’s true nature. It rejects excessive ritual and scriptural study, focusing instead on the transformative power of meditation and intuitive understanding. The school is heavily influenced by Daoist principles, fostering harmony with nature and simplicity in daily life. Central to Chan is the idea that awakening is already within us, waiting to be realized.
