Cardinal Numbers (Guṇa–saṅkhyā)

Numbers are often used as adjectives and agree with the noun they qualify. The first four numbers (1–4) decline according to gender, while numbers 5–10 are indeclinable.

  1. Eko (m.) – Ekā (f.) – Ekaṃ (n.) – one

  2. Dve (m./f./n.) – two

  3. Tayo (m.) – Tisso (f.) – Tīṇi (n.) – three

  4. Cattāro (m.) – Catasso (f.) – Cattāri (n.) – four

  5. Pañca – five

  6. Cha – six

  7. Satta – seven

  8. Aṭṭha – eight

  9. Nava – nine

  10. Dasa – ten


Ordinal Numbers (Anukrama–saṅkhyā)

Ordinal numbers behave like adjectives and decline by gender and number:

  1. Paṭhamo (m.), Paṭhamā (f.), Paṭhamaṃ (n.) – first

  2. Dutiyo, Dutiyā, Dutiyaṃ – second

  3. Tatiyo, Tatiyā, Tatiyaṃ – third

  4. Catuttho, Catutthī, Catutthaṃ – fourth

  5. Pañcamo, Pañcamī, Pañcamaṃ – fifth

  6. Chaṭṭho, Chaṭṭhī, Chaṭṭhaṃ – sixth

  7. Sattamo, Sattamī, Sattamaṃ – seventh

  8. Aṭṭhamo, Aṭṭhamī, Aṭṭhamaṃ – eighth

  9. Navamo, Navamī, Navamaṃ – ninth

  10. Dasamo, Dasamī, Dasamaṃ – tenth
