The Optative Mood in Pali, also known as the Potential Mood, is a form that expresses possibility, wish, or advice. It is not a tense, but rather a mood used to convey situations that could occur under certain conditions.

Key Points about the Optative Mood:

  • Purpose: Used to give advice, make suggestions, or express possibilities.

  • Not a Tense: Unlike verb tenses that indicate when an action occurs, the optative mood indicates the potential or possibility of an action.

  • Conditional Words: Often used with words like Sace (if) and Yadi (if), introducing a condition for the action.

Forms of the Optative Mood:

In Pali, the optative mood is conjugated differently based on the verb's ending and person. Let's look at the forms for the verb paṭha (to read) in the optative mood:

Conjugation of Verbs in the Optative Mood:

PersonSingularPlural

Paṭhama P (First Person)paṭheyya paṭheyyuṃ

Majjhima P (Second Person)paṭheyyāsi paṭheyyātha

Uttama P (Third Person)paṭheyyāmi paṭheyyāma

For example:
paṭheyyāmi (I would read)
paṭheyyaṃ (I might read)
paṭheyyuṃ (we would read)
